Here are some useful guides with how to get started with your search engine optimisation for your website.
Step 1: Understand the Basics of Search Engine Optimisation
Firstly, I recommend reading this guide to get a good understanding of what Search Engine Optimisation is all about. It always helps to understand what you are trying to achieve before you start taking over the SEO world
You can download the Google SEO Starter Guide from here: Google SEO Starter Guide
Step 2: Keyword research for your industry
The next step is to perform your keyword research. Luckily google provides some useful tools for this. For initial keyword research to determine what you should be optimising your website for, see this tutorial below:
Step 3: Shortlist the key words and key phrases
With the data above, it is important to choose approximately 2-3 key words or phrases per page of your website that you wish to optimise. Use the knowledge from previous steps to help you strategically select the ones that are likely to provide the best benefits for your website. I must emphasise that it is important to ensure that your Page headings, titles, content and key words/phrases are all relevant to each other for each page. There is little point choosing key phrases such as "cleanest australian beach" on a page that is talking about dogs.
Step 4: Plan your on-page optimisations
Usually the best way to start here is to prepare a spread sheet with each of your pages listed in the left most column, and each of the SEO elements listed across the top of the table to create your table layout. The SEO elements that should be included across the top need to include at least:
- Page Title
- Heading 1
- Meta Description
- Meta Keywords
Fill in this table with new improved text that both follows the guidelines outlined in the Google SEO Starter Guide, and use the shortlist of key words and phrases that you obtained from the previous step.
Step 5: Implementation on your website
The final step is to implement these changes on your website. Unfortunately I cannot go through this in detail since every site varies depending on what system they are built on, and what customisations have been made, etc... So for this step, I would recommend locating tutorials or guides on how to change each of the SEO elements outlined in the previous step for your particular website.
Step 6: Monitor and Tweak
Finally, keep track of how your ranking and website traffic is changing, hopefully improving. I would recommend experimenting over time to see how changes that you make to your website affect this, and keep tweaking until you are maximising both your ranking and traffic.
